Sensitive Skin Shaving Problems

Many men think their Sensitive Skin Problems such as Razor Burn, Rashes, Redness, Tenderness, Razor Bumps and Ingrown Hairs are caused by Shaving.

Not so, in fact, shaving does not cause sensitive skin problems.

On the contrary, proper shaving is good for your skin as the process involves exfoliation of the skin, the removal of dead skin cells and moisturisation.

So, what does cause shaving skin problems?

  • Lack of preparation before shaving
  • Blunt razor blades especially modern multi blade cartridge razors
  • Using ‘gunk’ skin enemy shaving gels and foams
  • Poor shaving technique
  • Shaving against the grain especially on a first pass

Cut Throat Razor

The Cut throat razor is a reusable hollow-ground blade, which is sharpened on one edge. The blade of the cut throat razor is attached to pin through its tang and rotates into the handle, between two pieces called scales. When folded into the handle, cut throat razors are protected from damage and the user from accidental injury, from the cut throat's blade. A cut throat razor is used in conjunction with shaving soap, shaving cream, shaving foam or shaving gel when shaving the face or head.

Ingrowing Hair

The condition, ingrowing hair, (aka ingrown hair), usually occurs on the face of a man, or on any part of a woman where the skin has been shaved. Ingrowing hair can be defined as a hair curling back into the skin, or growing sideways into the skin. The ingrown hair can cause uncomfortable, itchy inflamation, shaving rash and pus collecting under the skin. Using quality shaving product can help avoid ingrowing hair conditions.

Razor Bumps

The medical term for razor bumps is Pseudofolliculitis barbae, which literally means false hair inflammation of the beard. Razor bumps tend to occur on sensitive skin and with the shaving of curly hair. Razor bumps leave the skin looking itchy and red and in some cases the inflammation can look like pimples. If left untreated, razor bumps can cause permanent scarring, if not treated.

Razor Burn

Usually a temporary condition, razor burn (aka as razor rash), manifests itself as a red rash on the skin; often on the neck, after shaving. It can be caused by lack of preparation, poor shaving technique, using a blunt razor or low quality shaving products. To help avoid razor burn, ensure that you warm the skin prior to shaving and use good quality shaving products every time you shave

Razor Rash

Also known as razor burn, razor rash is a temporary irritation of the skin, usually caused by lack of skin preparation, poor quality shaving products, or poor shaving techniques. To avoid razor rash, warm the face with a warm flannel prior to shaving, apply a quality shaving cream, balm or soap and shave with a good quality razor, with a fresh, sharp blade and use a good quality magnifying shaving mirror, so you can see exactly what you are doing during the shaving ritual.

Safety Razors

A safety razor is a razor, unlike the cut throat or straight razor, where the skin is protected from all but the tip of the edge of the blade. It is designed to eliminate much of the danger of injury whilst shaving.

Shaving Brush

A shaving brush, shaving soap brush, or shave brush, is a small brush, usually around four inches in length, which is used to apply shaving cream or shaving soap to the face or head when shaving. The value of a shaving brush is mainly determined by the quality of the bristle, with top quality shaving brushes using the finest quality badger hair.
Badger hair shaving brushes are split into four categories, pure badger, best badger, super badger and silvertip badger brushes.

Shaving Cream

Shaving cream; often called shaving gel or shaving foam, is a cream that is used to facilitate a smooth clean shave and to help prevent razor burn. Shaving cream can be applied by hand, but best results can often be achieved when applied with a good quality badger hair shaving brush.

Shaving Mirrors

Shaving mirrors come in all shapes and sizes. Attempting to shave without a shaving mirror, is like trying to shave without using a razor - you are unlikely to achieve very good results. Shaving mirrors are usually found in a bathroom and the ideal mirror will allow you to monitor your shaving strokes, whilst studying your face and head

Shaving Products

The term Shaving Products is used to encompass any product or accessory used to facilitate a satisfying clean shave. Shaving products include safety razors, shaving brushes, cream, lotions, cut throat razors, shaving mirrors, wash bags, aftershave, shaving soap, etc.

Shaving Soap

It is a common misuse of the term, Shaving soap, when referring to shaving cream, shaving gel or shaving foam. Shaving soap is a hard, high lather soap that comes in a shaving bowl with a lid. Shaving soap is used in conjunction with a shaving brush to build a lather on the face or head to help facilitate a close, satisfying shave and reduce skin irritation and razor burn.
